Abstract

The invention comprises D 1,4-pregnadiene-11b ,21-diol-3,20-dione, or an acid ester thereof, or a salt of such an acid ester and a process for converting D 4-pregnene-21-ol-3,11,20-trione to the corresponding D 1,4 - steroid compound, which comprises subjecting the starting material to the oxidizing activity of an organism of the genus Mycobacterium, e.g. M. phlei. The 21-hydroxy group may be esterified with hydrocarbon mono- or dicarboxylic acids, e.g. by means of the acid anhydride, acyl halide or the acid itself. The esters with dicarboxylic acids form salts with alkali. Examples describe the preparation of 1,4-pregnadiene-21-ol-3,11,20-trione and the acetate, propionate, butyrate, hemi-succinate, hemiphthalate, benzoate and valerate thereof, and salts of the acid esters. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 807,227.ALSO:A therapeutic composition comprises D 1,4-pregnadiene - 11b ,21 - diol - 3,20 - dione, or an acid ester thereof, or a salt of such an acid ester incorporated in a suitable carrier therefore.
