Abstract

836,550. Scrap briquetting processes. LINDEMANN, W. Dec. 10, 1958 [Feb. 8, 1958], No. 39859/58. Class 87(2). A scrap briquetting press has a press chamber 1 with a hinged lid 6, the free end of which moves past a wall 10 extending from the chamber, there being a clearance 12 between the end of the lid and the wall when the lid is closed. The surface of the wall 10 is curved in relation to the arc of movement of the free end of the lid so that the clearance 11, when the lid is half open, is less than the clearance 12, thus reducing the danger of scrap getting jammed between the end of the lid and the wall. For the same purpose, ridges 13, 14 are formed in the lid and wall, of various profiles as described in the Specification. Modifications are described in which the wall 10 may be swung away from the end of the lid, to free pieces of scrap, by an eccentric fitting in a slot in the wall and rotated by a hand lever or by a hydraulic ram ; by releasing a bolt which locks the wall to the press frame ; by releasing a screw threaded stop ; or by raising the wall, which has guide slots, by screw jacks or hydraulic rams or a crane. In another modification, Fig. 12, a knife 28 is mounted at the top of the wall and, when rocked by an eccentric 31 rotated by a lever 32, swings back to release jammed scrap. In another modification the knife is advanced by turning a screw threaded shaft. In yet another modification, scrap jammed between a side wall and the lid is freed by swinging the wall outwards by the action of an eccentric. In a further modification, Fig. 15, the clearance between the lid 6 and one of the side walls, e.g. 36, is increased by loosening a nut 42 on the end of the pivot shaft of the lid and then, by tightening screws 43, retracting a bush 39 (which normally projects inwards by the amount of clearance between the lid 6 and the wall 45) and thus allowing the lid to be moved so that the clearance between it and the wall 36 is doubled : by retracting the other bush 40 the clearance the other side may be doubled.
