Abstract

851,132. Metal working presses. U.S. INDUSTRIES Inc. May 27, 1958 [July 16, 1957], No. 16838/58. Class 83 (4). A metal working press P has an overload device 81 adapted to yield at a predetermined load and comprising spaced cylindrical sleeves 83, 84, Fig. 3, urged relatively outwardly by springs 95 and interconnected by a rod 91 adjustably connected to one of the sleeves and slidably mounted in the other. The press slide 29, Fig. 1, is connected by four stroke-adjusting screws 31 with crank or eccentric actuating mechanism in the crown 22 driven by a motor 36. Each screw 31 carries a nut 71 adjustable by a worrn 105, Fig. 3, and supported by a pressure-plate 75. The latter is biased upwardly by a series of overload devices 81, each comprising disc springs 95, engaged between the cylindrical sleeves 83, 84 interconnected by rod 91 screwed into sleeve 83, the devices being thereby adjustable to yield at a predetermined pressure. When the springs yield a micro-switch 97, Fig. 5 (not shown) is opened to stop the driving-motor. In other embodiments, Figs. 7, 8, 9 (not shown), the bottom die, the bolster or the upper die are supported on a series of disc springs. The press is of particular use for stamping sheet-metal.
