[Also in Group XXIII] A pneumatically operated togglemechanism for actuating a machine part, such as the movable jaw 12 of a vice 11 having a fixed jaw 10, which is guided for rectilinear movement, is characterized in that the toggle 16, 17 is operated by a double-acting piston 14, and in that the cylinder wall and piston are slotted to accommodate the toggle which is pivotally anchored to the cylinder block at 18, is operated by abutment faces 22, 23 of the piston engaging its mid-pivot and is pivoted at the other end to a block 19, slidable. in a cylinder block slot, adjustably connected through a screw 20 to the movable jaw of the vice. In Figs. 4, 5 (not shown) the mid-pivot of the toggle has a cam face which co-operates with the abutment face 22 of the piston to limit its movement and to tend to lock the toggle on dead centre. Antifriction rollers may be incorporated in midpivot, Figs. 6, 7 (not shown).
