Abstract

846,699. Vices. GAUBERT, R. J. M. May 13, 1959 [May 22, 1958], No. 16491/59. Class 61. In a vice having a sliding jaw 13, Fig. 4, moveable over parallel guide rods 12, the jaw 13 is clamped against the work by a lever operated cam 21 pivoted at 22 to a carrier 23 loosely engaging the guide rods 12 and which tilts under the action of the cam to bring hardened washers 27 into tilted gripping engagement with the rods 12. The carrier 23 is mounted within a housing 17 of the jaw 13 in which an aperture 38 is provided for the cam operating lever 36. The washers 27 are pressed into engagement with the carrier by a spring 28 within the housing. The cam 21 engages a spring loaded plunger 31 which limits the clamping pressure to that of the spring 34. In a modification the plunger 31, Fig. 8, is solid and the guide rods 12 yield axially against spring 46 to limit the clamping pressure.
