Abstract

836,403. Gas-blast switches; pneumatic action of switches; indicators for switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Sept. 14, 1956 [Sept. 20, 1955], No. 26843/55. Class 38 (5). In a switch-gear system comprising a plurality of gas-pressure-operated circuit-breakers 4 ... 6 arranged for simultaneous operation, an indicating arrangement is responsive to the individual pressures which operate each circuitbreaker, the indicating arrangement detecting when a time-lag between the instants of application of the pressures is longer than a predetermined period. In Fig. 1 air blasts are applied to the circuit-breakers 4 ... 6 through pipes 7 ... 9 which also supply pressure-operated micro-switches 10 ... 12. If pressure is not applied to the pipes at the same instant and the time-lag is sufficient, then one of the microswitches will have its movable contact in engagement with a fixed contact 10a, 11a or 12a, whilst another will have its movable contact in engagement with a fixed contact 10b, 11b or 12b so completing a circuit for a relay 14 which closes its contacts 18 to complete a circuit for an indicator 19. Auxiliary switches 15 . . . 17 open with the circuit-breakers to prevent incorrect operation of the indicator should there be a difference in the resetting times of the micro-switches when the application of the air-pressure ceases. The circuit-breakers may be provided with the pneumatic retaining and interlocking coupling of Specification 818,521, Fig. 2 (not shown), each micro-switch 37, Fig. 3b, being connected to the valve assembly of the associated circuit-breaker by means of connectors 45, 42. When a blast of air occurs in the valve assembly, air forced through the connectors acts on the central limb 49 of a trifurcated blade spring 46 and forces the blade spring to move from the position shown in which a moving contact carried by the spring 46 engages a fixed contact 48, into a position in which the moving contact engages a fixed contact 50. The switch 37 resets when the blast pressure subsides.
