Abstract

836,395. Surgical dressings. GRISWOLD, H. W. June 10, 1955 [June 16, 1954 (3); May 2, 1955], No. 16840/55. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group VIII] An absorbent pad comprises an absorbent core and a cover of soft permeable non-woven fabric, the fabric comprising fibres arranged in areas of relatively great fibre density bordering areas of relatively small or zero fibre density, e.g. holes, the fibres being in mechanical engagement with one another, in unstressed positions and in mechanical equilibrium. The absorbent core 11 is made from fluffed wood pulp or layers of creped cellulose. An inner cover of creped cellulose may be provided. The cover 12 consists of groups 15 of fibres which with junctions 16 define circular holes 14 arranged in a regular pattern such as that defined by the intersections of two sets of parallel lines crossing at right angles or 120 degrees. The holes 14 may alternatively be square or triangular. Fibres in each group 15 are substantially parallel to the perimeters of the holes they surround but extend in diverse directions at each juncture 16, the fibres being longer than the groups containing them. The fibres are normally between “ and 2 inch long, but unbeaten or unhydrated paper-making fibres shorter than this may be used. The fibres may be of cotton, wood, wool, jute, ramie, abaca, viscose or cuprammonium rayon, cellulose acetate, nylon or " Dynel " (Registered Trade Mark). The fabric may be strengthened by adhesive binding material or binder applied by printing or impregnation. The cover is made from a fibrous web, e.g. a three-ply laminate of carded cotton webs, using apparatus described in Specification 836,397. The web is passed around a rotating drum having circular perforations through which water is directed by nozzles within the drum. Water passing through the web forms holes which are arranged in a pattern corresponding to the pattern of the perforations in the drum. Specifications 816,673 and 836,396 also are referred to.
