Abstract

835,900. Fuel briquettes. BRIKO N.V. Sept. 12, 1956 [Sept. 13, 1955], No. 27927/56. Class 50. In a process for making fuel briquettes, coals other than lignite are treated with a small amount of a low molecular weight aliphatic monocarboxylic acid, e.g. acetic or formic acid, and the treated product, either alone or in admixture with a further solid fuel in finely divided form, is briquetted at a temperature of at least 45 ‹ C. The coal to be treated may be in finely divided form, e.g. having a particle size from 0.1-0.2 mm., and the treatment may be carried out at a temperature between 80‹ and 100‹ C. A small amount of paraffin wax or liquid paraffin may be added to the treated coal. Lignite may be added to the coal before treatment with the acid, or lignite treated with a low molecular weight aliphatic mono-carboxylic acid may be added to the treated coal before it is briquetted. In an example 1000 g. of coal were ground to an average particle size of 0.15 mm., heated to 100‹ C. and sprayed with 22 cc. of 80% acetic acid. After thorough mixing the resulting mass was briquetted. Specifications 798,828 and 798,829 are referred to.
