Abstract

835,829. Fibre forming apparatus. OWENSCORNING FIBERGLAS CORPORATION. Dec. 4, 1957 [Dec. 6, 1956], No. 37812/57. Class 56. A fibre forming apparatus has an orificed rotor rotatably driven by a journaled hollow shaft 20 and quill 22 through which molten fibre forming material 5 e.g. glass or other mineral material, is introduced to the rotor 12 for centrifugal formation of fibres, characterized in that the quill 22 engages the hollow shaft 20 in telescopic relation and is connected in driving relation therewith through a disengageable interlock mechanism. The shaft or quill may have a slot formed in its wall while the other of the said two members is adapted to removable securement in the slotted member, or slots may be formed in both shaft and quill and an annulus which may be biased in an axial direction by a spring, surrounds both shaft and quill and has projections extending into the slots, thus establishing driving relationship therebetween. As shown, quill 22 has slots 42, 44, 46 at its upper end. Shaft 20 has slots 76 at its upper end and a bevelled edge 48 at its lower extremity which engages a reciprocally shaped abutment 49 formed on an enlarged portion 50 of quill 22. Annular members 67 and 69 have sockets 70 which hold springs 72 which bias the members in an axial direction. Annulus 67 has bores 80 which hold tenons 82 having head portions 84 which extend into slots 76 thus preventing rotation of the annulus relative to shaft 20. Annulus 69 also has bores which hold tenons 88 having head portions 90 extending into slots 76 and which have projections 92 extending into slots 42, 44, 46 of quill 22 thus establishing a driving connection between shaft 20 and quill 22. Quill 22 has a hub portion 38 and the rotor 12 has a peripheral wall 118 having orifices 120 and associated flared walls 122, 124, connected to the hub. The rotor 12 has a cup shaped member 130 having a bottom wall 132 and a wall 133 having orifices 142, for receipt of molten fibre forming material for centrifugal distribution to the peripheral wall 118 of the rotor. The fibres projected through orifices 120 in wall 118 may be further attenuated by annular blasts of intensely hot high velocity gas from outlets 166. Shaft 20 may have the armature 112 of an electrically energizable motor integrally mounted thereon.
