835,495. Variable resistors. PHILIPS ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Dec. 12, 1958 [Jan. 2, 1958], No. 196/58. Class 37. A potentiometer having a casing in two parts adapted for relative rotary motion has a resistive element attached to the first part, a wiper attached to the second, a rotatable control shaft passing through the first part to engage the second and contact terminals mounted on the first part extending, in the direction of and substantially parallel to, the control shaft. As shown in Fig. 1, the potentiometer consists of a casing 2 of insulating material having two parts 1 and 3, and a control shaft 4 of insulating material. Mounted on the part 1 is an annular resistive track 5 and a collector ring 13, to which external connections may be made via terminals 26, 27 and 24, 25 respectively. These terminals also serve to secure the potentiometer to the circuit panel 23, on the upper side of which are printed circuit conductors. The second part 3 of the casing 2 is keyed on to the spindle 4, and carries the annular wiper element 6 from which extends contacts 18 and 19 contacting the ring 13 and the resistive track 5 respectively. Lateral movement of the shaft 4 is prevented by the ring 10 or by a modified form of the shaft and casing (Fig. 2, not shown) having conical mating surfaces.
