835,098. Induction passages; starting compression ignition engines. MASCHINENFABRIK AUGSBURG - NURNBERG A.G. Nov. 15, 1957 [Dec. 12, 1956], No. 35718/57. Addition to 783,218. Classes 7(2) and 7(3) The admission duct 8 shaped and arranged as described in the parent Specification is modified by the addition at the inlet opening 9 thereof of a flow adjusting member 14, adjustment of which varies the swirling motion in the cylinder. The member 14 is preferably shaped as the quadrant of a sphere and is carried by a flange 12. In the position shown the member 14 deflects the flow mainly along the side 6 of duct 8- and maximum swirl is produced in the cylinder. Rotation of the flange 12 through 180 degrees positions member 14 to deflect the Sow mainly along the wall 7 whereby the swirl in the cylinder is reduced. The member 14 may be. controlled .automatically by a thermally responsive device so as to reduce the rate of swirl at cold-starting in. a compression-ignition engine.
