Abstract

835,079. Inserting oversized members into resilient pipes. WEDNESBURY TUBE CO. Ltd., and CARTLIDGE, E. Aug. 20, 1958 [Aug. 26, 1957], No. 26785/57. Class 108(3) A hand tool for inserting rigid rings in pipes of thermoplastic material such as polythene, has a plug element 10, Fig. 3, formed integrally with a screwed stem 11, which screws into a spigot element 13. The spigot element 13 is counterbored, and the screwed portion 11 carries a fixed head which prevents the spigot element being screwed off the threaded portion 11. In use a rigid ring 21 is sleeved over the plug element 10 and up the stem 11 on to the spigot portion 19 so that it abuts an annular shoulder 17. The tool is now inserted plug end first into a pipe 22 until the spigot portion 19 is entered into the pipe bore and the end edge of the pipe 22 abuts the ring 21. The pipe 22 is now clamped between jaws 23 of a vice. This anchors the plug element 10 against axial movement. The spigot element 13 is now rotated in the appropriate direction to advance it axially so as to force the rigid ring 21 into and along the pipe bore. This screwing action is continued until a shoulder 18 comes up against the end edge of the pipe 22. The vice is now slackened off and the tool completely withdrawn from the pipe 22 through the ring 21, leaving the latter behind within the pipe. The plug element 10 may be milled or otherwise roughened to ensure a firm anchorage in the pipe, instead of having annular grooves. The screwed stem of the tool may be formed integrally with the spigot member and may screw into a bore in the plug. The pipe end may be heated to facilitate insertion of the abutment as described in Specification 819,754.
