Abstract

1,197,423. Pipe couplings. HOKE MFG. CO. Inc. 9 April, 1969, No. 18281/69. Heading F2G. A coupling includes a body 2 having a bore G for reception of a pipe 1, and an abutment face 5, a collar, e.g. a nut 4, having an abutment face 24, means, such as screw-threads 3, for drawing the faces 5, 24 towards each other and forward and rear ring-like ferrules 8, 11 A tail element 30 has an axially extending sleeve part 31 interconnected by a generally radially directed part to an axially extending forward part 33 engaging the rear ferrule 11. Drawing of the surfaces 5, 24 towards each other causes a part of each ferrule and a part of the tail element to be pressed towards the pipe. As shown the ferrule 8 has a conical surface 13 for co-operation with the frusto-conical camming surface 5 of the body and a concave surface 16 which is contacted by the convex surface 19 of the ferrule 11 When the nut is screwed on to the body the ferrule 11 is caused to roll or gyrate in a counterclockwise direction to force the forward edge 25 thereof to bite into the pipe, the forward rounded edge 26 of the ferrule 8 also biting into the pipe. Advance of the surface 24 of the nut causes the neck portion of the element 30 to press into and grip the pipe, the part 33 of the element being crushed and deformed by engagement thereof with the rear of the ferrule 8.
