Abstract

981,709. Pipe couplings. PARKER-HANNIFIN CORPORATION. Dec. 19, 1963, No. 50214/63. Heading F2G. A tube coupling comprises first and second threadedly engaged coupling members 1, 5, respectively, the first member 1 being counterbored at 9 to receive a tube end and having a tapered opening 10 in contact with one end of a ferrule 14, the other end of the ferrule being in contact with a tapered wall 12 of the second member 5. The ferrule comprises a body portion having a taper 19 of increasing radial thickness joined at the the first member end to a cylindrical portion 15 which has an internal diameter greater than that of the body portion and joined at the second body or nut end to a head portion 21 of greater external diameter than the body portion, the adjoining part providing a weakened portion 20. On tightening the nut, the edges 18 formed between the body portion and the cylindrical portion 15 and the edge 17 at the extremity of portion 15 are forced to. bite into a tube T, a weakened portion 19a allowing bending of the portion 15 and the tapered face 19 of the ferrule abutting the taper 10 to stop further movement. The head portion swings until the rear face abuts the tapered face of the nut to stop further movement and the inner radial face is forced against the tube. Preferably the taper 10 is about 12 degrees and the taper 19 about 10 degrees. The coupling may be of brass for use with copper tubes.
