Abstract

835,057. Testing containers for leaks. INLAND STEEL CO. May 15, 1957 [Feb. 15, 1957], No. 15400/57. Class 40 (1). [Also in Group XIX] A container is tested for leaks by subjecting it to the same internal pressure as a known air. tight container, by sealing both containers, and by then connecting the two containers by means of a conduit containing a heated thermocouple and observing any change in the output of the thermocouple. The Figure shows an airtight container 12 and a container 10 to be tested connected to an air supply 16 via a pressure control valve 18 and a tap 20. A tap 24 is also provided in conduit 14 for sealing off the containers 10 and 12 from one another. The containers are also connected via conduit 26 which incorporates a tap 28 and a thermocouple element and associated heater filament 30. The heater filament is supplied from a D.C. source 34 via control apparatus 38. The output from the thermocouple is fed to a pyrometric controller 42 the output from which is used in any known manner either for indicating or rejecting faulty containers. The conduits 14 and 16 are tapped into a plate 50 and the container is held against this plate and its associated jacket 52 by means of a lower plate 54 and an hydraulic system 56, 58 and 60 controlled by valve 62 and an electrically operated switch 64 which may be pressure controlled so that the same sealing pressure may be applied to containers 10 of different sizes. The pyrometric controller may comprise a millivoltmeter which measures the output of the thermocouple and the indicator of which moves a flag which controls the light falling on a photosensitive relay device.
