Abstract
1, 063,006. Testing for leaks in containers. K. MADER. July 23, 1965 [July 24, 1964], No. 31627/65. Heading G1S. A method of testing a container containing gas for leaks comprises the steps of: introducing each container 10 into a housing 3, raising the temperature of the container 10, generating a current by means of a fluid medium in each housing 3, withdrawing the fluid medium from its housing, testing the fluid medium withdrawn from its housing 3 for traces of gas contained in the housing, removing the container 10 from its housing 3, and sorting the removed containers. The containers 10 are held within the housing by clamping elements 13 spread apart by a spring-loaded expandable cone 17. The housing includes a number of passageways 32a, 32b and 34a, 34b which are arranged to communicate with the lid and the outside of the can. In operation, the cans are lifted on a table 1 to a conveyer track 4 to be clamped within hoods 3. The hoods 3 are conveyed through a heated water bath 5 with the hoods partially immersed in the water to close their open ends, to a testing station, where each hood is evacuated to determine whether gas has leaked from the can.
