Abstract

1,189,652. Testing pipes for leaks. G.G. RIDDLE. May 8, 1967 [Feb. 9, 1966], No.5741/66. Heading G1S. Apparatus for testing a pipe network for leaks comprises a fan 1 which blows air through a pipe 3 to a container 4 enclosing smoke producing capsules, the air and smoke then passing through a pipe 5, on/off cock 6 into the pipe system to be tested. A valve 10 regulates the fan output and a diaphragm valve controls the input to the pipe network. In operation, the apparatus is connected to the pipe work under test, and the presence of leaks detected by opening the diaphragm valve to admit the air under pressure into the pipeline, such that if the air pressure remains constant for a predetermined length of time, the pipe is considered to be leak free, if it is found to be leaking then the diaphragm valve is partially closed so that the air pressure balances the leakage, and the operator detects the leaks visually. The smoke may be replaced by means having a pungent smell or coloured trace.
