1,120,336. Acoustic leak-detection. SHELL INTERNATIONALE RESEARCH MAATSCHAPPIJ N.V. 24 Jan., 1967 [26 Jan., 1966], No. 3467/67. Heading H4D. [Also in Division G1] Apparatus and process for locating/or testing equipment that is capable of being transported with the flow of matter through a pipe-line, which equipment is fitted for the observation and, possibly, further processing of acoustic vibrations, for instance, for the purpose of examining pipe-lines for leaks, comprises sources of vibrations placed in predetermined places on the outside of the pipe-line which sources are capable of generating acoustic vibrations such that they can be observed by the equipment. Properly working equipment will record these sources of vibrations when passing them, by which uncertainty as regards the equipment not functioning properly is removed. Moreover the location of a leak can be confined to the interval between two successive sources of vibrations. The sources could be of the type to produce sonic or ultrasonic vibrations.
