Abstract

1447089 Closures for pipes CATERPILLAR TRACTOR CO 27 Nov 1973 [7 Dec 1972] 54939/73 Heading F2P [Also in Division B8] Apparatus for allowing introduction of a testing or sampling probe 34 into a closed fluid system whilst maintaining the system in closed condition comprises a resilient member 18, e.g. of rubber, having one side arranged in use to be exposed to fluid 16 within the system, and the other side exposed to outside the system and having a passage 24 joining the two sides, and means for holding the passage closed whilst allowing the probe 34 to be passed therethrough. The apparatus also comprises a tubularmember 12 attached in use to the closed fluid system and the member 18 is held in the member 12 by a clamping member 26 threadedly associated therewith. Inclined surfaces 32 and 28 on the members 12 and 26 respectively act on the periphery of the member 18 and so hold the passage 24 closed. As described a conical surface 36 on the inside of the member 18 is engaged by the fluid to assist in holding the passage 24 closed, and a conical surface 38 on the other face assists in directing the probe 34 into the passage 24.
