Abstract

1359187 Ultrasonic inspection devices NIPPON STEEL CORP 7 Oct 1971 [7 Oct 1970 31 Oct 1970] 46767/71 Heading H4D Apparatus for ultrasonically detecting flaws in a pipe or tube 6 comprises an annular rotary probe-carrier 11 having an inside diameter only slightly greater (e.g. by 1 to 2 mm.) than the pipe or tube diameter, and a tubular nozzle 15 for supplying (via duct 16) an acoustic coupling medium (e.g. water) between the probe 12 and the pipe or tube. Good acoustic coupling is maintained at high rotation rates of the carrier, the coupling medium forming a stable layer of such thickness that multiple reflections between the layer and the pipe or tube do not hinder the flaw detection. To accommodate tubes of different diameter, interchangeable carriers 11 are provided. The carrier fits in a recess 14<SP>1</SP> in a rotary member 14 and is held therein by bolts or pins 18. Member 14 rotates, relative to a stator 17, on a water bearing or ball bearing.
