Abstract

1426954 Ultrasonic inspection devices; ultrasonic probes SUMITOMO METAL INDUSTRIES Ltd 8 March 1973 [9 March 1972] 11320/73 Headings H4D and H4J An ultrasonic inspection system includes an immersion tank through which flat bars to be inspected are transported by guide rollers, and first and second pluralities of probes arranged within the tank respectively above and below the path of the bars so as to project surface waves over the whole surface of a bar. In the embodiment shown, hot rolled bars 10 are conveyed two at a time through an immersion tank 41 by pinch rollers and guide rollers. Water jets from nozzles 45 cool the bars and pre-wet them to prevent the formation of air bubbles on them as they enter tank 41. A pulse-echo inspection of the bars with surface waves, to detect surface flaws, is made using probes 43 mounted on carriers 42. The probe positions, separations and inclinations are adjustable. Echo signals are indicated on a cathode-ray tube or a pen recorder. Compensation for attenuation of the ultrasonic signals with propagation distance is provided so that flaw size can be estimated quantitatively. The apparatus sensitivity is adjusted with the aid of reference specimens having artificial flaws. Air bubbles on the probes (and hence disturbing noises) are eliminated by directing water from an arcuate array of jets on to the probe faces (Figs. 4A to 4D, not shown).
