Abstract
696,920. Ultrasonic inspection devices. GLASS DEVELOPMENTS, Ltd., and SPROULE, D. O. March 7, 1952 [March 16, 1951]. No. 6359/51. Drawings to Specification. Class 118 (ii). In a pulse-echo ultrasonic testing system, a two dimensional display of defects is produced by moving a transmitting and receiving piezo-electric crystal transducer unit over the surface of the test sample or by rotating a directional transducer unit on the surface thereof, the echo signals being applied to intensity modulate a cathode-ray tube whose time base is synchronised with the pulse transmission and the time base being displaced or rotated in correspondence with the movement of the transducer. Alternatively the time base is maintained stationary and photographed, the film or camera being displaced or rotated in correspondence with the transducer movement. The transducer unit may comprise separate transmitting and receiving transducers mounted as a single unit, Fig. 1 (not shown). The following combinations of movements are described: (1) rectilinear movement of transducer unit and of time base or camera, Figs. 1 and 2 (not shown), (2) rotation of transducer unit and of time base of camera, Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), giving a radar P.P.I. type display and (3) rotation of transducer unit and rectilinear displacement of time base or camera. Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), giving a radar B type display. In system (1) the ultrasonic beam is transmitted perpendicularly to the surface of the test sample but in systems (2) and (3) a beam Rayleigh (i.e. surface) waves is directed along the surface when searching for surface defects, e.g. cracks, and a beam of longitudinal or transverse waves making a small angle with the surface of the test piece is employed when detecting flaws in sheet metal. Since the intensity of the echo depends upon the angle of incidence of the impinging beam, the transducer unit in systems (2) and (3) may be moved along an arc of a circle with the suspected flaw as centre.
