Abstract

834,484. Batch mixing-machines. POURE, E. E. June 24, 1957 [June 26, 1956], No. 19845/57. Class 86 A mixing apparatus Figs. 1 and 2, comprises a tank 1 formed of lower and upper parts 2, 3, end walls 15 and a cover 4, the tank being supported by crossstays 12, 13 from two circular end-plates 9, 10 rotatable on fixed sets of rollers 11. Rotatable in the bottom 5 cf the tank is a pair of helixes 6 whilst a pair of helixes 8 is rotatable in the top 7 of the tank. The shafts 14 of the helixes pass through packing glands 16 in the end walls 15, the glands being made in halves, as described with reference to Fig. 3 (not shown), in order to facilitate their assembly or removal. The lower pair of helixes 6 are rotatable by a separate motor through a belt and pulley 37 on a shaft 32 coaxial with the plates 9, 10, the cross stays 12 and the longitudinal central axis of the tank. A pinion 31 on the shaft 32 driving a gear 29 on one shaft 14 the pinion 31 driving the other shaft 14 of the pair through an idler gear at a higher speed. Similarly the upper pair of helixes 8 are driven from a separate motor through a belt and pulley 38 on a shaft 33 coaxial with the shaft 32. The idler wheel 34 is shown in this instance and is mounted on a shaft 39 carried by the end plate 10. If desired the tank 1 may be rotated at the same time as one or both pairs of helixes. Owing to the separate drives of different speeds for the pairs of helixes the apparatus can be used for two stage and/or two speed mixing. For example for one stage of mixing the lower pair of helixes 6 is used. When the drive is stopped the tank is rotated through 180 degrees and the drive for the pair of helixes 8 is started. If desired only a single upper helix may be provided symmetrically above the bottom pair of helixes and the top part 3 and lower 4 modified accordingly. The driving motors may be mounted on the end plates 9, 10, or there may be a single driving source driving the pairs of helixes through clutches. In the case of separate driving motors these may rotate at different speeds or they may transmit their drives through reduction gearing of different ratios.
