Refractory bricks arranged in a number of columns and rows as a lining to a metal wall are arranged so that interlocking flanges on the bricks limit movement between adjacent rows of bricks but permit expansion of each column to expand in a direction parallel to the metal wall, the refractory lining being secured to the metal wall by anchors engaging the flanges of a pair of bricks of alternating rows, the anchors having a limited range of movement relative to the wall. The refractory lining of a soaking pit comprises vertical stacks of I-section blocks 32, arranged in series perpendicular to the wall, each series being interlocked with the adjacent series. Alternate outermost stacks are anchored to metal wall 24 by members 46, Fig. 11, engaging the shoulders of the blocks, with horizontal flanges 48 supporting short T-section blocks 38<SP>1</SP>. A bolt 49 engages vertical slots in the member 46 and in a channel 40 bolted to the outer wall 24, so that the stacks of blocks are free to move a limited amount in a vertical direction. T-section blocks 38 fill in alternate series so as to present a flush inner surface, and the comer 53 between two walls is formed of non-interlocking blocks. A channel 20 may be formed by using blocks of suitable lengths at the top of the walls so as to provide a seal with the cover. In a modification, Fig. 7, a cast refractory coping 56 is mounted on top of the wall.
