Abstract
1,065,002. Furnace roofs. M. H. DETRICK CO. Oct. 23, 1983 [Oct. 24, 1962], No. 40334/62. Heading F4B. A circular furnace roof comprises a water-cooled outer circular ring 40 connected to an inner frame by radial I-beams 41 at 60 degrees angular intervals, and pipes 45 supported by the I-beams and defining a plurality of concentric hexagons the joins between adjacent sides of said hexagons being located at the I-beams 41. Refractory bricks are suspended from the pipes 45 and include a radial row of hexagonal bricks beneath each I- beam 41, the intervals between said radial rows being filled in with rows of rectangular or trapezoidal bricks. Six additional I-beams 41 are arranged between the 60 degrees spaced members 41. The inner frame comprises an inner ring 42 and beams 44 which may be electrically insulated from the inner ring. Each hexagonal brick, Fig. 2 (not shown), comprises a cluster of four trapezoidal bricks and is formed with a recess for engaging a hanger, Fig. 3 (not shown). The relative dimensions of the bricks utilized in the roof construction are given. Two sizes of rectangular bricks are used together with the trapezoidal and hexagonal bricks to form dodecagonal and rectangular openings such as 60 and 72 respectively. Electrodes (not shown) passing into the furnace through the dodecagonal openings are surrounded by suitably shaped water boxes to make a satisfactory seal. Steel sections 48, located between the upper face of the bricks and the underside of the supporting structure, prevent movement of the bricks when the furnace is tipped &c. In a modification, Figs. 5 and 6 (not shown), two additional brick shapes, each having one arcuate face, are utilized to form circular openings.
