Abstract

898,532. Furnace covers. SUNROD MANU. FACTURING CORPORATION. Oct. 3, 1960 [Nov. 2, 1959], No. 33896/60. Class 51 (2). In order to prevent disintegration of the refractory lining of a furnace cover, the furnace cover comprises a layer of refractory material 30, Fig. 2, having a cooling assembly on its outer side characterized in that a number of studs 20 secured to the cooling assembly project into and are covered and enclosed by the refractory layer. Preferably, the cooling assembly comprises a number of parallel water-cooled tubes 10, Fig. 3, each supported by straps 11 held relative to a support structure including along inverted U-section 8 by wedges 15. The section 8 is welded to a short inverted U-section 7 which in turn is welded to one of a plurality of I-beams 6 supported on box structure 5. The studs which may be in the forms of truncated cones or prisms 20, Fig. 5, are arranged in a basic pattern which is repeated over much of the water-cooled surface, the pattern having sixteen possible stud positions arranged in four columns of four rows each stud being located only in the following positions: The first studs 20a in the first row and fourth column, the second stud 20b in the second row and third column, the third stud 20c in the third row and first column, the fourth stud 20c in the fourth row and second column The first and third studs are inclined to the plane of the layer of refractory material in a direction substantially opposite to the direction of inclination of the second and fourth studs. In this way the studs form an interlocking pattern as shown in Fig. 2.
