Abstract

1410195 Gas discharge display panels FUJITSU Ltd 19 Dec 1972 [29 Dec 1971] 58452/72 Heading H1D The surface of a dielectric layer bounding the discharge gap 23 of a gas discharge display device and covering a plurality of electrodes 25 is composed of portions 26 and 27 having different secondary electron emissivities. The portions 26 may be a low melting temperature glass including more than 70% PbO and having a high emissivity. The strips 27 may be a high melting temperature glass including Al 2 O 3 or SiO 2 and having a low emissivity. A discharge 19 at the cross-point of electrodes 25 and 25a and stepped along the row by applying a polyphase voltage to the conductors 25 in turn is prevented by the strips 27, 27a from moving to either of the adjacent rows. The strips 27 may be on the surface of the portion 26 or may be sunk in the surface so as to be co-planar therewith. In an alternative embodiment (Fig. 8, not shown) strips of high emissivity are provided in register with the electrodes and overlying the portion of dielectric of low emissivity. The invention may be applied to a pattern generator in which the high emissivity dielectric is applied selectively in a pattern at the electrode cross-points at which discharge is desired. Alternatively a low emissivity negative pattern may cover a high emissivity dielectric (Figs. 9A and 9B, not shown).
