Abstract

Aligned columns at horizontal intervals act as vertical cantilevers providing primary support for a retaining wall of precast reinforced concrete elements, simply supported edge on planks spanning horizontally between each pair of columns. The ends of the planks are located by grooves in the sides of the columns, the vertical spacing of the planks approximating to their effective height. The columns may be set in sockets in massive foundation blocks, and the layout of the planks may provide horizontal exposed terraces with topsoil. The columns may be battered with the planks inclined in the opposite direction.
