Abstract

<PICT:1116545/C6-C7/1> In a series of aligned electrolytic baths, each bath has an outer casing which is anchored to the ground at a plurality of points; the opposing faces of the casings of adjacent baths are braced by at least one thrust member electrically insulated from at least one of said casings; and both end faces of the series are buttressed, the thrust members and buttresses acting in coordination so that deformation of the sides or bottom of the bath is prevented or reduced. The casing of each lateral face of each bath may also be buttressed. In the form shown the baths rest on a concrete slab 101, and each wall of the cell casings is formed from I-section beams 111, 112, metal sheet 113 and flange 115. Buttressing between adjacent cells is provided by cross-pieces 141, 142, of large cross-section; the anchoring means comprises a plurality of bars 134 attached to the casing, e.g. one at each corner of the cell, the lower end being embedded in the concrete slab 101 and having attached thereto a transverse element Figs.2, 3 (not shown); the lateral faces of the cells may be buttressed using a triangular thrust block of iron and concrete, which is anchored to the base, Fig. 4 (not shown) and the end faces of the series may be held by a block of large mass, e.g. of masonry.
