[Class 51 (i)] A furnace wall construction comprises columns 21, Fig. 1, carrying brackets 22 to receive horizontal supporting rods 23 between which are arranged rows of refractory blocks 24, 25 provided with recesses to engage with the rods on their lower and upper surfaces respectively. The adjoining surfaces of the blocks 24, 25 are in frictional engagement and may be recessed as shown at 30 to receive clay and at 130 to receive anchors of burnt fireclay. The supporting rods 23 may be hollow for the circulation of cooling fluid. Expansion joints are provided at 26 between each group of blocks between a pair of rods 23. Fig. 4 shows a modification wherein an intermediate row of blocks 38 is arranged between the blocks 37, 39 engaging with the rods 23. Anchors 131 of rectangular section are inserted in recesses 132 in the blocks. The wall may be built up of a number of panels formed, as shown in Fig. 13, of a rectangular frame 42, 43 secured to the columns 21 and provided with brackets 22 carrying rods 23 for engaging with recesses in the upper and lower surfaces of blocks 44, 45 respectively. The lowermost row of blocks is supported on a flange 41. The panels are secured at their edges. Fig. 19 shows an alternative form of panel member comprising a plate 51 with marginal flanges 52 and brackets 22 for the supporting rods.
