Abstract
833,004. Cables. SUBMARINE CABLES Ltd. Dec. 11, 1957 [Dec. 12, 1956], No. 38014/56. Class 36. A coaxial submarine cable has an inner conductor comprising at least two tapes applied longitudinally to a central core the tapes being of such width that the edges of the inner tape or tapes do not overlap whilst those of the outer tape or tapes do overlap and are closed by a seam, e.g. a box seam. The thickness of the tapes is chosen so that in combination they provide the required current carrying crosssection. A lightweight cable embodying these features consists of a central core of steel strands 1 and 2 constructed to obviate twisting under tension, an aluminium tape 3 with a gap 9 between its edges, a thinner copper tape 4 closed by a box seam 10 which is pressed into the gap 9 by drawing through a die, a layer of polythene 5, an outer conductor 6 comprising six aluminium tapes helically applied, a cotton tape binding 7 preferably impregnated with a corrosion inhibitor such as barium chromate, and a polythene sheath 8. The shore ends of the cable may have external armouring. Specifications 703,782 and 740,647 are referred to.
