Abstract
832,837. Life-saving apparatus. SCHERMULY PISTOL ROCKET APPARATUS Ltd. July 24, 1958 [Aug. 23, 1957], No. 26637/57. Class 77 A life-saving raft 45, Fig. 5, is suspended from a ship's side in a cradle 34 supported by chains 41 connected to quick-release mechanism 42 attached by a clip 43 and a turnbuckle 44 to a wooden frame 33 mounted on the ship's side. The quickrelease mechanism comprises a member 1 open at one end and containing an explosive 6 and an electric igniter 7 fired, e.g., from the bridge of the ship, and a plug 2 having an electric socket 11, the open end of the member 1 being spun over the reduced end of the plug. A member 17 having an eye 23 for the attachment of one of the chains 41 is screwed on to the plug while members 19, 18 having eyes 21, 31 respectively for the attachment of the other chains 41 and the slip 43 are slid over the member 1 and held in place by a nut 29 on the threaded end of the member I. In use, the explosive is fired so as to separate the parts 1 and 2 and release the raft. A percussion igniter may be used instead of the electric igniter.
