Abstract

832,294. Cables. PIRELLI S.p.A. Dec. 18, 1957 [March 6, 1957], No. 39318/57. Class 36. A screened conductor having thermoplastic insulation has a tape of semi-conductive non- metallic fabric wound on under tension between the insulation and the metal screen, heat then being applied to the surface of the insulation to cause it to soften and exude through the pores of the fabric tape and adhere thereto on being cooled. The tape may be applied to the insulated conductor whilst the latter is passed at constant speed through a tubular oven, heated electrically or otherwise, the cable then being cooled by passing through a copper tube through which compressed air flows. The insulation may be polythene, the tape being of treated paper or cloth and the screen being of copper or aluminium tapes. A heating process using an infra-red oven is described, and heating may take place either before or after application of the screening tapes.
