832,113. Hearing appliances. TERRELL, M. Oct. 14, 1958 [Oct. 24, 1957], No. 33285/57. Class 81 (2). [Also in Group XL (c)] Hearing apparatus, for use under water, comprises a pair of tubes 10, one for conducting sounds to each ear, and means securing the tubes to the head, the ratio of the distance between the ears to the distance between the outer ends of the tubes being approximately equal to the ratio of the speed of sound in air to the speed of sound in water. The tubes each having a narrow central portion 12 and conical end portions 13, 14 are fitted over each ear and held in position by a hood 11 or a head clamp. A diaphragm 15 may close the outer end of each tube which is made of rubber or metal coated with sound-insulating material. The tubes may be constructed without the outer cones 14, the ends of the tubes remote from the ears being of the same diameter as the narrow central portions.
