833,506. Ear plugs. HENDERSON, J. D. July 31, 1956 [Aug. 3, 1955; July 16, 1956], No. 23609/56. Class 81 (2). An auditory canal plug comprises a deformable head A having at least one annular peripheral flange 21-24 and a mounting tube 20 which is sufficiently rigid for inserting the plug in the ear and maintaining an open passage through the head. Each annular flange 21-24 has a hub 26-29, hubs of adjacent flanges fitting together to constitute a central hub within which the mounting tube is disposed. At the end inserted in the ear, the mounting tube has a terminal flange 31 against which the central hub bears. The end of the mounting tube projecting from the ear is normally closed but has a transverse slit 33 by which any excess pressure created within the ear during insertion of the plug may be released. The projecting portion of the mounting tube may be severed from the device and the remaining flanged portion secured to a concha mould, Fig. 1, through which a sound tube 13 passes to interconnect the interior of the mounting tube and a tube 17 associated with a speaker 18. The concha mould 10 has an extension 11, which in use lies behind the tragus of the ear, and the sound tube 13 is swivelled in the concha mould so that the tragus is gripped between the sound tube and the extension to hold the device in position. The flanged head is made from rubber or synthetic resin or sponge material.
