832,045. Starting and stopping fuel injection engines. DAIMLER-BENZ A. G. Feb. 21, 1958 [Feb. 22, 1957], No.-5718/58. Classes 7(3) and 7(5) [Also in Groups XXXI and XXXVII] A "start" and "stop" control member 3 for a diesel engine comprises an axially movable spring-loaded rod 2 connected by a cable 5 to the injection pump control rod so that in the "stop" position the pump delivery is cut off whilst in the "start" position the control rod is moved to an excess fuel supply position, the rod being movable successively from the "stop" position, in which it is held by spring-loaded detents 12 engaging a recess 8, through a normal operating position and a combustion chamber preheating position to a starting position, the various positions being indicated by co-operation of the detents 12 with recesses 6, 9, in the rod. In the normal operating and preheating positions the detents 12 engage shoulders at opposite ends of the recess 6, the circuit of the preheating coil in the combustion chamber being completed in the preheating position by spring-loaded contacts 19 engaging terminals 13. When the knob 3 is pulled out to the starting position the detents 12 ride upon to the recess 9 and a second pair of spring-loaded contacts 22, displaced 90 degrees from the contacts 19, is moved to engage contacts 14 to complete the starting motor circuit, the preheating coil circuit remaining completed. After starting, the spring 16 returns the knob 3 to the normal running position shown in Fig. 1. When the knob 3 is pushed in to the stop position a lever 23, Fig. 3, is moved to the position 23<SP>1</SP> to turn a lever 24 into the position 24<SP>1</SP> to enable a steering lock mechanism to be locked.
