Abstract

831,998. Printing surfaces. RITZERFELD, W., and RITZERFELD G. April 2. 1957 [April 28, 1956], No. 10684/57. Class 100(2) [Also in Group XXXVI] A method of making a composite sheet suitable for use as a lithographic printing plate comprises electrolytically roughening the metal foils of two composite strips 7 of material, each strip comprising paper joined to a metal foil by a water resisting adhesive the composite strips being drawn through a common electrolytic bath and connected to a source of current in such a manner that the metal foils act as the electrodes of the bath. The outer surface of the paper is provided with a water repellant protection lacquer, and thickness of the composite strips is not greater than 0.1 millimetre, the metal foil being preferebaly aluminium or aluminum foil. The strips are drawm from rolls 6 over rollers 8, 9, the latter being connected to an alternating current source 34. The strips are guided by rollers 10 through a bath 23 of an inorganic acid electrolyte, e.g. hydrodhloric acid. The electrolyte may be continuously regenerated and replenished from a storage container 24 by a pump 25. After passing through after-treatment baths 30, 31, the strips are passed betweenrollers 21, 22 for pressing upturned oxide particles back into the metal foil surface, dried and cut into sheet by cutters 33. A cut sheet may be imaged by placing it on a base sheet coated with a fatty wax layer so that the wax layer lies against the electrolytically roughened metal layer. The assembly may then be inserted in a typewriter with the coated base sheet against the platen and the cut sheet is struck by the type.
