Abstract

831,748. Rotary drum driers, KÍRBER, K. Aug. 12, 1957 [Sept. 26, 1956], No. 25353/57. Class 34(2) Tobacco is dried in a rotating drum by two heat sources one of which emits a constant heat quantity whilst the heat supplied by the other depends upon the moisture content of the tobacco. The material passes from a shoot 18, Fig. 1, to a drum 1 heated internally by groups of steamheated stationary pipes 2 and air drawn from the atmosphere by a fan 14 and passed through a steam heater 14b, Fig. 2, to a valve-controlled pipe 20 which connects with an inlet passage 21. The valve 24 is automatically operated by a mechanical linkage 36, Fig. 4, in dependence upon signals transmitted from a tobacco moisture detector and measuring device 31a through an amplifier 32, an integrator 33, an amplifier 34 and an electric motor 35. The moisture-laden air leaving the drier through an outlet 29 passes through a screen 27. Each steam pipe group is encased in a stationary tobacco agitating blade.
