Abstract
Dicyclopentadienyl magnesium is prepared by reacting at a temperature of at least about 450 DEG C., magnesium or a magnesium alloy which exists as such at above 450 DEG C. with cyclopentadiene or a hydrocarbon engendering cyclopentadiene, e.g. a C2-C10 hydrocarbon. Preferably the reaction is conducted by passing the vaporized cyclopentadiene or hydrocarbon over the magnesium or magnesium alloy in a heated tube, if desired in a stream of inert gas, e.g. helium, argon or krypton.
