Abstract

The zinc content of indium is reduced (e.g. from 1000 or more to below 50 parts per million) by exposing molten indium to an oxygen-containing atmosphere thereby preferentially oxidizing the zinc, the oxide of which is then removed from the surface of the indium (e.g. by treatment with concentrated hydrochloric or other acid, polishing or abrading). The oxidizing atmosphere may consist of a stream of air or an inert gas containing at least 0.01% of oxygen, and the duration and temperature of the treatment may be up to 9 hours and 250 DEG C. respectively. The preferential oxidation may be performed during a zone-refining treatment or by exposing the molten indium contained in a crucible to the oxygen-containing atmosphere whilst stirring gently.
