Abstract
Hydrogen halide is removed from silicic acid esters, prepared from an alcohol and a silicic acid halide, by incorporating into the ester a powdered metal of Group 2 of the Periodic Table and removing the resulting metal halide and unchanged metal, e.g. by filtration. The metal is added in preferred quantities of from 0,1 to 0,5% by weight of the ester. In the example, ethyl orthosilicate is treated with dry air to reduce the acid content to 0,2%, and 0,3% by weight of zinc powder, based on silicate, is stirred in. The resulting mixture of zinc chloride and zinc is filtered off.
