Abstract
Sodium is treated to remove any residual calcium content by intimately mixing a gas mixture with molten sodium at a temperature below 300 DEG C., the gas mixture containing at least 98% by volume of an inert gas such as nitrogen and 2% or less by volume of oxygen. The gas mixture, the volume of which is preferably at least 20 times that of the sodium treated, may be introduced into the melt by bubbling or by means of a turbomixer. The gas may be continuously recirculated and replenished with an oxygen-containing gas such as air to maintain the concentration of oxygen. Calcium is then separated by allowing the melt to settle or by filtration. The process is effective in removing calcium from sodium containing up to 1,000 parts per million of calcium.
