Abstract

The aluminium content of raw materials containing aluminium is increased by treatment with aluminium chloride vapour at 500-900 DEG C. The gases produced may be fractionally oxidized with oxygen to produce pure oxides of titanium, iron, aluminium and silica. Alternatively the gases may be treated with titanium dioxide followed by iron oxide to obtain fractions of the pure oxides. Pure aluminium chloride may be produced by chlorination in the presence of reducing agents of starting substances containing alumina which may have been freed from iron and titanium, by treating the alumina with aluminium chloride above 800 DEG C.
