Abstract

830,981. Slitting - apparatus. INTERNATIONAL COMPUTERS & TABULATORS Ltd. May 9, 1958 [June 18, 1957], No. 19219/57. Class 31 (1). Apparatus for longitudinally slitting a paper web during lengthwise movement of the web is characterized in that slitting of the web is effected by a pair of co-operable rotatable cutting discs and separation of the separate portions of the web is effected by passing them respectively over and under a guide located adjacent to the discs to extend lengthwise of the path of the slit web as it leaves the discs, the discs and guide being located in a housing to be slidable therewith axially of shafts with which the discs are respectively rotatable, the housing being also slidable axially of and arranged to be secured to a spindle parallel to one of the shafts and having opposite sides thereof provided with openings to permit the passage therethrough of edge portions of the separate web portions during movement thereof respectively over and under the guide. As shown, a perforated paper web 3 fed from printing apparatus by rotary pin wheels 1 is slit longitudinally by means of slitting units A to D each of which comprises two cutting discs 8, 9 rotatable respectively with shafts 10, 11 which are driven from the shaft 2 on which the pin wheels 1 are mounted. The disc 9 is urged into engagement with the disc 8 by means of a spring 43, Fig. 3. Adjacent cut portions of the web are arranged to move one over and one under a guide 18 so as to effect separation of the separate portions of the web, the manner in which the web portions deviate from the path of the web after slitting being predetermined by guide fingers 118, Fig. 5. The guide 18 is provided with flanged portions 19, 20, Fig. 3, to which are secured the J-section elements 21, 22 of a housing so as to form openings 27, 28 for the passage of adjacent cut portions of the webs. The opposite sides of the housing are apertured to permit the housing to be moved axially of the shafts 10, 11 and the sides of the housing are provided with further apertures 29 through which extends a stationary spindle 30 to which the slitting unit is secured, in its adjusted position, by a screw 31. A feed roller 44 rotated positively by the shaft 11 co-operates with a feed roller 45 freely rotatable on the shaft 10, the roller 45 being supported by a pair of plates 47, 48 pivotally mounted on the spindle 30 so that the roller 45 is gravitationally urged towards the roller 44.
