Abstract

796,300. Perforating apparatus. AKTIEBOLAGET PRODUKTIONS-SERVICE. Feb. 3, 1956 [Feb. 7, 1955], No. 3457/56. Class 31 (2). Apparatus for perforating paper or the like comprises a roller provided with radial studs or pins for supporting the paper, a pair of rotary cutters adapted to remove the paper supported by the ends of the studs, one of the cutters being rotated in the opposite direction to the roller and the other cutter being rotated in the same direction as the roller, and means for moving the paper and roller together relatively to the cutters. The apparatus shown in Fig. 1 comprises a rotary roller 4 provided with studs or pins 6 about which a paper web 2 is advanced, and rotary cutters 8, 15 having helicallyarranged cutting edges 9, 16 respectively. The cutters 8, 15 are rotated at a peripheral speed many times greater than that of the roller 4, the cutter 8 being rotated in a direction opposed to, and the cutter 15 being rotated in the same direction as, that of the roller 4. The end surfaces 11 of the studs 6 are preferably annular. The cutting edges of the cutters 8, 15 are arranged to penetrate into the paper to a depth approximately equal to the thickness of the paper without, however, touching the end surfaces of the stud 6. The perforated paper is pressed over the studs towards the surface of the roller 4 by means of a roller 18 coated with resilient material. The perforated paper web is cut to the desired width by means of knives 21 which project into slots 22, 23, Fig. 5, in the roller 4. The cutters 8, 15 may be displaceable axially either manually or automatically, e.g. by an axially reciprocating movement being imparted to each cutter. As shown in Fig. 5, the bearings 28 of the cutter shaft 29 are mounted in apertures disposed eccentrically in rings 27 which are angularly adjustable to vary the distance between the cutting edges 9 and the end surfaces of the studs 6. Ball or roller bearings 30 are arranged between the roller 4 and the cutter 8 and the bearing races 31 are arranged to roll on tracks 32.
