Abstract

830,928. Railway vehicles; cars, continuous, forming trains. PATENTES TALGO S.A. April 16, 1956 [April 25, 1955], No. 11536/56. Classes 103(4) and 103(6) The wheel and axle assemblies 10, 11 at the adjacent ends of coupled railway vehicles A, B, Fig. 1, are connected through steering linkages 20 to 23 to a separable two-part rigid traction member C pivotally connected at 17, 18 to the vehicles whereby the member C controls the steering of the wheels 13. A member C comprises bars 15, 16 having portions 19a, 19b, respectively, of a known rigid coupler 19, whereby the bars form a rigid link. Lateral projections 24 on the bars serving as wheel guiding devices are pivotally connected to rods 23 in turn pivoted to levers 20, Fig. 3, fulcrumed on the ends of the axles 12, the levers 20 also being pivoted to rods 21 pivoted to brackets 22 on the bottoms of the vehicles. The assemblies 10, 11 are connected to the vehicle bodies by spring struts 14, Fig. 4, which permit some forward and rearward movement of each wheel, undesirable lateral movement of the axles being restrained by known axlecentering means e.g. those disclosed in Specification 690,350. When the vehicles A, B, pass round a curve steering of the assemblies 10, 11 is effected in a similar manner to that disclosed in Specification 701,483. When the coupler 19 is broken the bars 15, 16 which pass through straps 40 are locked in positions aligned with the central longitudinal axes of the vehicles A, B by passing pins (not shown) through aligned apertures 43 in depending flanges 41 and 42 on the straps and bars respectively. Between the pairs of projections 24 the bars 15, 16 may be longitudinally resilient by having telescoping parts containing compression springs. The bars 15, 16 are connected by horizontal pins 47 to trunnion members 45 in turn pivoted by the vertical pivot pins 17, 18 to turnable members 46 mounted in the vehicle frame sills against the action of annular rubbermetal sandwiches, as described with reference to Figs. 10 to 12 (not shown). In the embodiment of Fig. 5, the bars 15, 16 each have a single projection 27. The levers 20 on the axles 12 are pivotally connected by forked and radius rods 26, 28, to brackets 25 and slides 30 respectively, the slides 30 being pivotably connected to steering rods 29 in turn pivoted to the projections 27. The steering in this embodiment is effected in a manner similar to that described in Specification 726,539. In a further embodiment described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown) a railway car is connected to a locomotive the car having a bar 16 as shown in Fig. 1, coupled to a transverse bar linked to the locomotive in a similar manner to that disclosed in Specification 723,206. When a vehicle of Fig. 1 is coupled behind a car having only one axle at the rear end adjacent the coupling, the axle of the car is maintained perpendicular to the axis of the car by radius rods whilst the axle of the vehicle of Fig. 1 is connected by radius rods to projections 24 of the traction member C whereby that axle is maintained perpendicular to member C. With this arrangement the wheels of the coupled vehicles attack the outer rail of the truck at negative angles as disclosed in Specification 615,298.
