The present application is a continuation in part of an application filed by me on February 6, 1930, in the United States Patent Office, Serial No. 426,277 now Patent No. 1,953,319 issued April The invention relates to car trucks and seeks to provide an improved truck of the type in which the side frames are flexibly connected. Further objects are to provide an improved arrangement 1 of the truck transom and spring-supported bolster, and improved tie bar means for the ends of the flexibly connected side frames.
The invention consists in the features of improvement hereinafter set forth, illustrated in the preferred forms in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Each of the truck side frames It is preferably formed of a single casting, the portions of which,
for the most part, are of U-section. Adjacent their ends the side frames are provided with pedestal yokes l l for engaging the journal boxes i2 and the latter, as usual, engage journals on the ends of the axles l3 of the wheels l4. Coiled supporting springs [5 are arranged within pockets in the ends of the side frames and rest upon the journal boxes or upon plates l5 carried. thereby, the spring pockets being formed by the inner and outer side walls of the side frames and transverse partitions W. In case the journal boxes are withdrawn, the spring seats or plates lE engage and rest on shoulders It at the upper ends of the integral pedestals ll.
The enlarged central portions of the side frames are provided with bearing openings which receive large hollow journal members It that form the enlarged headed ends of the truck transom l1. Keys l8 fixed within pockets in each side frame on opposite sides of its bearing opening, engage slots l9 in the opposite sides of the corresponding journal member l6, and thereby connect the side frames and transom in a manner permitting limited indepedent rocking movements of the side frames in vertical plane.
The truck transom is provided at the inner end of each journal with a transverse web 20 which extends inwardly from the journal wall and also projects outwardly beyond the periphery of the journal to form a shoulder 2| which abuts against a bead 22 formed upon the inner face of the 5 side frame about the bearing opening therein. The main body of the transom between its end journals comprises sides 23, each of which is double or of hollow box section, as most plainly shown, in Fig. 2, that is, each side comprises 10 spaced vertical walls connected by webs at their upper and lower edges. At the upper portions, the sides of the transom are provided with seats for the pivot pins 24 of hangers 25 which extend downwardly through openings in the top and bot- 15 tom webs of each transom side and between the spaced vertical walls thereof. At their lower ends, the hangers carry cross bars 26 which engage the ends of and support a spring plank 21.
A bolster 28 and bolster springs 29 are disposed 20 between I the side walls of the transom. The springs are preferably elliptical and extend transversely of the truck with their outer ends projecting into hollow journal members I6 of thetruck transom through openings 20' in the 25 webs 20.
The rounded upper edges of the cross bars 26 engage shoes 30 disposed within seats in the ends of the spring plank, the arrangement being such that the hangers are inclined outwardly to 30 a slight extent from their upper pivoted ends to their lower ends. Hence, the load on the truck bolster tends to center it between the side frames while permitting the limited transverse movement of the bolster and the car body carried 35 thereby. To aid in centering the bolster, it is provided at its ends with pockets 3| for receiving coil springs 32. The latter carry buffer plates 34 having stems 35 extending within the springs (see Fig. 3). These plates engage the trans- 40 verse webs 20 at the ends of the transom and so cushion the transverse movement of the bolster and aid in centering it.
Brake heads 36, except at the outer end of the truck, are mounted on trunnions on the ends 45 of transverse brake beams 38. Hangers 39 for the brake beams are pivoted to integral inwardly ofiset lugs or brackets 40 and 4| on the side frame. At the outer or rear end of the truck, the brake beam heads 36 are mounted directly on the lower ends of brake levers 42' which are pivoted at their upper ends to the inwardly offset projections M at the corresponding ends of the side frames, and these levers are pivoted 55 and an end extension 51.

Floating brake levers 42, 43 and 43' are connected by fulcrum members 44 to the brake beams 38. The pairs of levers 42 and 43 on the inner or forward end of the truck are connected intermediate their ends by a pull-rod 44, and each brake lever 43 is connected intermediate its ends by a pull-rod 45 to the brake beam 38. The inner brake levers 43 and 43 at each side of the truck are-connected at their upper ends by a pullrod 46 that is guided and supported on the side frame by grooved rollers 41, the latter being mounted on studs 48 fixed to and projecting inwardly from the side frame lugs or brackets 40. A supporting guide for each of the levers 42 comprises metal straps 49 and 50 disposed inside of the adjacent wheel and secured to the inwardly projecting lugs 46 and M of the adjacent side frame. The upper ends of the levers 42 extend between the guide bars 49 and 50 and clevises 5| connected to the upper ends of the levers engage the upper edges of the guide bars or straps.
Flexible connections or tie bars are provided between the ends of the truck side frames, and are so arranged that they will not interfere with the limited independent rocking movement of the side frames in passing over irregularities in the track. At the same time, the end connections brace the side frames and aid in resisting application of the braking pressure. For this purpose the central end portions of the side frames are provided with integral horizontal extensions 52 having inturned offsets 53 and 53 at their ends which are connected by transverse bracing tie bars. In the form shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive, the tire bars are in the form of rods 54 each of which is provided at one end with an eye which extends within a pocket in the offset 53 of one of the side frames and is connected thereto by a horizontal pivot bolt 55. At its opposite end the tie rod has a combined pivotal and telescopic or sliding connection with the extension 53 of the other side frame. As shown, this end of the rod is provided with a flange 56 The flange 56 has a convex face which engages a concave seat in the end wall 58 of the side frame offset 53, and the extension 51 extends loo'sely through an opening therein. A heavy spring 59 is coiled about the end extension 51 of the tie rod and is interposed between a, collar 60 thereon and theend wall 58, an adjusting nut 6| being provided for holding the collar 60 in position.
In the fo'rm shown in Fig.5, the end tie bar comprises a casting 62 of U-shape in section, that is, having flanges at its upper and lower edges and having end walls 53 which abut against the faces of the lugs 53 and 53' on the side frames, such end walls having convex or slightly rounded faces. At one end the tie bar has a lug 64 which projects within the pocket of the side frame lug 53 and is connected thereto by a pivot bolt 55. The opposite end of the tie bar is connected to the side frame lug 53 by a bolt 65 which extends through the abutting end walls of the tie bar and side frame lug and, like the extension 51 of the form shown in Fig. 4, carries a heavy spring 59 similarly held in place by a collar 60 and 5 nut 6|. In the form shown in Fig. 6, both ends of the tie bar 62' are provided with similar spring connections. The flexible end connections or tie bars brace the side frames and, at the same time, provide horizontally extensible connections between the ends of the side frames and do not interfere with their limited independent movement in vertical direction.
Changes may be made in the details set forth without departure from the scope of the invention as defined in the appended claims.
I claim as my invention:
1. A car truck comprising separate rigid side frames, a connecting transom whereon said side frames are journaled intermediate their ends, and transverse tie bars pivotally connected to the ends of the side frames in a manner permitting the independent vertical movement thereof.
2. A car truck comprising separate side frames, transverse means flexibly connecting said side frames intermediate their ends, and horizontally yielding tie-bars extending between and connected to the ends of the side frames and permitting the independent vertical movement of the side frames. w
3. A car truck comprising separate side frames flexibly connected intermediate their ends for limited, independent movement in vertical planes, and transverse tie-bars connected to the ends of the side frames to oscillate in vertical direction, each tie-bar having a horizontally yielding connection with at least one of said side frames.
4. A car truck comprising separate side frames flexibly connected intermediate their ends for lim ited, independent movement in vertical planes,
and transverse tie-bars connected to the ends of the side frames to oscillate in vertical direction, each tie-bar being pivoted to one of said side frames and having a pivotal horizontally yielding connection with the other side frame.
' 5. In a car truck, separate side frames, transverse connecting means whereon said side frames are centrally journalled for limited, independent rocking movement, said side frames having end extensions and transverse tie-bars flexibly connected to said end extensions in a manner permitting the relative rocking movement of said side frames and tie-bars in vertical planes.
6. In a four-wheel car truck, a truck transom having journal ends, a spring-supported bolster carried by said transom, side frames mounted on and connected to the journal ends of said transom for limited rocking movement, said side frames. having end extensions, and bracing tiebars extending between and abutting against said extensions and connected thereto for vertical oscillating movement.
