Abstract
863,913. Railway vehicle bogies; cars, continuous forming trains. GENERAL STEEL CASTINGS CORPORATION. March 10, 1959, No. 8297/59. Classes 103(4) and 103(6). A railway vehicle bogie Figs. 2 and 4 comprises a pair of wheel and axle assemblies 7, 9, and 8, 9, a pair of side frames 10 supported on the axle boxes by springs and a spring plank or beam 16 pivoted, on a single transverse axis, to both of the frames 10 through the agency of bonded rubber-bushings 13. As shown in Fig. 4, a tubular member 14 secured to the end of the plank 16 in bearings 15 extends through bearings 12 on the frame 10 with the interpositioning of the bushes 13. Mounted in end seats 17 of the plank 16 are springs 18 having caps 19 connected through swing hangers 22, 23 to the end frames 25, 27 of the bodies 4, 5 of adjacent cars, the pivotal connections at the ends of the hangers being universal joints. Lateral and longitudinal movements of the caps 19 relative to the plank 16 are prevented by links 35 and 37 pivotally connected to the plank and caps. To resist tilting of the plank 16 about its longitudinal axis extending transversely of the bogie, anchor rods 28, 28a are connected between flanges on the plank and the centre and ends of a yoke 30 pivoted to the frame 27. The rods include rubber pads 31 which permit the rods to swing laterally. Referring to Fig. 5, the frame 27 of the body 5 has a coupling tongue 38 pivoted by a pin 41 to a clevis 40 in turn pivoted by a pin 42 to a tongue 39 on the frame 25 of the body 5. The bodies 4 and 5 have brackets 44, 45 interconnected by a rod 43 with the interpositioning of rubber pads. Rubber bumpers 46 Fig. 4, on the plank are engageable with pads 48 on the tongue 38 and snubbers 50 are provided between the caps 19 and seats 17. The bogie described may be used wholly to support the end of a car in which case the hangers are connected to the same body frame and the bumpers engage pads on that frame. In another embodiment described with reference to Figs. 7 to 10 (not shown) a bolster is secured through a central enlarged friction pivot to a transom replacing the spring plank, the transom and the bolster passing through upper and lower portions of the side frames. Air springs on the ends of the bolster support the body frame, snubbers being provided between the bolster ends and the body frame. Brackets on the transom support motors connected to gears carried by the axles the gear-boxes being connected by torque arms to the transom. The ends and centre of the bolster are connected by longitudinal anchor rods to depending brackets on the vehicle body. In a still further embodiment described with reference to Figs. 11 to 15 (not shown) snubbing devices connect the ends of the bolster to the ends of a spring plank and a vehicle body frame is provided with a central friction pivot engaging the bolster. In this case anchor rods are provided between the bolster and spring plank. The wheels are outboard of the side frames which may be integral with the axle boxes. The ends of the spring plank are provided with brackets for brake mechanism and blocks to engage brake discs on the axles, outboard of the wheels.
