Abstract

892,485. Railway vehicles undercarriages; cars continuous forming trains; combined buffer and draw gear arrangements. GENERAL STEEL INDUSTRIES Inc. Aug. 5, 1958, No. 25101/58 Classes 103(4), 103(5) and 103(6). A railway bogie, Figs. 1, 2 and 3, comprises a transverse frame 11 having inverted U-shaped ends in which are journalled stub axles 13 of wheels 14, coil springs 16 supported by seats 15 on the frame and swing hangers 22 suspended from spring caps 17 on the tops of the springs 16, the lower ends of the hangers 22 being connected to the sides of the body underframe 2, 3, 4, 6. The caps 17 are prevented from moving laterally and longitudinally but are permitted to move substantially vertically by. anchors 19, 20 between the caps and the frame. The hangers are provided at each end of the cap 17 and are connected to flanges 18 thereon for universal movement through the agency of rubber pads 27, 28. The lower end of each hanger 22 is universally connected to a bracket on the body underframe through rubber pads 29, 30. Each hanger has a substantially horizontal arm 23, Fig. 2, having a bifurcation connected through coil springs 31 to a bracket 32 on the body underframe. To permit rotation of the bogie relative to the body frame pairs of anchors 43, 46 are universally connected through rubber pads to the frame 11 and to yokes 41, 45. The yokes, Figs. 1 and 2, are pivoted on each side of a centre sill 1 of the body underframe by pivots 40, 44 spaced longitudinally on the sill. Rigid arms 47, 48 on the yokes are connected together by diagonally disposed links 49, Fig. 1. The bogie is. connected to the adjacent bogie of another vehicle car by a conventional coupler C and a coupler 50 the inner end of which is connected by flanges 52 and rubber pads P to the frame 11 and also by pads P<SP>1</SP> to a bracket 11b of the frame 11. The coupler 50 which prevents relative angular movement , between adjacent trucks has bifurcated parts 53, 55 described with reference to Fig. 7 (not shown), the part 53 having a reduced extension 54 to enter a hollow part on the adjacent coupler and the part 55, being hollow to receive a reduced extension on the adjacent coupler. Bellows-like flexible sleeves surround the joints between the parts. In a modification described with reference to Figs. 8 to 10 (not shown) the springs 16 are replaced by air springs and the lower horizontal portions of the hangers are connected through links to a rubber torsion spring mounted on the body underframe. In another embodiment described with reference to Figs. 11 to 14 (not shown) also utilizing air springs, only a single hanger is suspended centrally between each pair of air springs and the hanger at its lower end is connected to a member in turn connected at its ends to rubber cylindrical torsion springs carried by the body underframe. The anchors 43, 46 in this instance are connected to the ends of a Z- shaped member pivoted at its centre to the body centre sill. The air springs and single hanger arrangement may be supported from the ends of a bolster mounted on coil springs on the bogie frame and slidable vertical on the bogie frame, all as described with reference to Figs. 15 and 16 (not shown). Another embodiment comprises a single coil spring at each end of the bogie frame from which is suspended a single hanger carrying at its lower end a beam the ends of which support further coil springs carrying the body underframe, as described with reference to Figs. 17 to 19 (not shown). The embodiment of Figs. 20 and 21 utilizes a bogie frame similar to that described with reference to Figs. 1 to 3 but in this case adjacent bogies and vehicle bodies are provided with stearing means. As shown, a vertical lever 180 is pivoted to each axle journal box and its upper end is connected through pads 185 to an anchor 182 connected to the associated vehicle body frame A whilst its lower end is connected through pads to an anchor 190. The ends of the anchors 190 are connected through rubber pads with the ends of crossed bars 192, 193 pivoted together at 194. The other ends of the bars are connected at 196 and 197 to the adjacent vehicle body frame B. A modified steering mechanism comprises connecting the anchors 182, 190 to a linkage on the associated vehicle body frame. In another embodiment described with reference to Figs. 24 to 27 (not shown) the bogie frame supports a single coil spring at each end and each spring cap is connected at its ends to swing hangers and to a two-part anchor device securing the cap against lateral and longitudinal movements relative to the bogie frame. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 791,677.
