Abstract
830,701. Submerged pipes. SCHUBACK, G. Sept. 13, 1957 [Sept. 13, 1956], No. 28872/57. Class 68(2) [Also in Groups XXVIII and XXIX] Apparatus for use in isolating areas of water polluted, e.g. with oil, and for isolating oil fires on the surface of the water comprises a flexible conduit 8 having apertures 10 and composed of separate sections 8<SP>1</SP>, 8<SP>2</SP>...joined by couplings 9 each having a shut-off valve 19. The conduit 18 is wound on a drum 18 on a vessel 7 and has its free end connected to a source of compressed air 20 on a neighbouring vessel 6. The vessel 7 is moved away from the vessel 6 to unwind the conduit 8 which sinks, in the desired position, to the bottom 4 e.g. of a harbour 1 in which it is desired to isolate the surface of oil, burning or otherwise. The conduit has sinker weights 14 and ground anchorage weights 15, the shut-off valves 19 on the couplings 9 being opened as the conduit runs off the drum 18. When the source of compressed air is switched on it escapes from nozzlelike apertures 10 in the conduit to form a vertical curtain of air rising through the water, a wall, composed of separate hummocks of water, providing a surface barrier to prevent the spread e.g. of the oil. The apertures 10 may be provided directly in the conduit 8 or, they can be separate nozzles 16, which have several very small apertures 10<SP>1</SP>, and are held in position by clips 17, Fig. 4. A two part clip 21, Fig. 6, comprises an upper part 22 having a nozzle 16 screwed therein, and a heavier lower part 23 which is bolted to the upper part 22 and acts as a sinker weight. The source of compressed air 20 and also the drum 18 with the conduit 8 may be mounted stationary on land, especially in the case of oil ports, or they can be mounted on land vehicles.
